History

The Sea Ranger Service originates from different initiatives (including Wildlife Air Service and SeaScope) that have focused on developing innovative and sustainable solutions to support governments in realising additional capacity for environmental monitoring of ocean areas.

Founder of the Sea Ranger Service, Wietse van der Werf, has worked in environmental conservation for 25 years and was awarded the prestigious Future for Nature Award in April 2016 for his innovative conservation efforts. The 50.000 euro award money was used to finance the start-up of the Sea Ranger Service.

One of the lesser-known objectives since the company’s founding is how it offers exclusive employment opportunities to veterans of the Royal Netherlands Navy and the Netherlands Marine Corps. The Sea Ranger Bootcamp and operational management of the Sea Ranger Service are coordinated by these maritime professionals.
